This Friday, Auto Sport Switzerland and the National Sports Commission have awarded A1 Team Switzerland the ‘Auto Sport Award’ for special merits regarding Swiss motor racing.

In May 2008, the Swiss squad secured the title in the 20-race A1 GP Series season, the “A1GP World Cup of Motorsport”. As representatives of the squad, Team Principal Max Welti and driver Neel Jani received the award on Friday evening in Bern.

“To be cited in one breath with former winners of the highest Swiss motor-sport award, such as Jo Siffert, Clay Regazzoni, Peter Sauber and Ulrich Giezendanner, represents a big honour for us,” said Max Welti. “Therefore, we want to represent Switzerland with even bigger commitment in the motor-racing world, in the future. We will give our very best to successfully defend our title in the already running fourth A1GP season.”

The Auto Sport Award ties in with the long-term tradition of the former Automobile Sport Authority that used to award the ‘Prize of the Central President’. With this award, Switzerland pays tribute to the dedication and achievements of the representatives of a nation that neither has got an own circuit suitable for international motor-racing events nor can rely on the support of an own automotive industry.

The fact that Swiss racing drivers again and again succeed in making it to the highest motor-racing categories, nevertheless, is due to the tireless commitment of sponsors and patrons on the one side as well as the logically structured young-driver support programme on the other. Neel Jani, for instance, made his first steps on the single-seater racing ladder – at the age of 16 – in the Formula A (today Formula Lista Junior). After having secured the title in this affordable series, in his maiden car-racing season, he won several races in the Formula Renault, the GP2 Series and – since 2005 – the A1GP Series.

Major merits for the successes of the Swiss A1 team are due to Max Welti. With his long-term activities as racing driver and manager, the 56-year old has contributed massively to the reputation of Swiss automobile racing – both in Switzerland and abroad.

Das A1 Team Switzerland ist am Freitag von Auto Sport Schweiz und der Nationalen Sportkommission mit dem “Auto Sport Award” für besondere Verdienste um den Schweizer Motorsport geehrt worden.°

Die Schweiz hatte im Mai 2008 die 20 Rennen umfassende A1GP-Serie, den “Nationen-Weltcup des Motorsports”, gewonnen. Als Vertreter des erfolgreichen Teams durften dessen Chef Max Welti und der Fahrer Neel Jani die Auszeichnung am Freitag Abend in Bern entgegen nehmen.

“Wir empfinden es als grosse Ehre, im gleichen Atemzug mit früheren Gewinnern der höchsten Schweizer Motorsport-Auszeichung wie Jo Siffert, Clay Regazzoni, Peter Sauber und Ulrich Giezendanner genannt zu werden”, sagte Max Welti. “Mit umso grösserem Einsatz wollen wir die Schweiz künftig auf dem automobilsportlichen Globus vertreten. Wir werden alles daran setzen, unsern Titel in der bereits angelaufenen vierten A1-Saison mit Erfolg zu verteidigen.”

Der Auto Sport Award knüpft an eine langjährige Tradition der früheren Automobilsportbehörde, die den “Preis des Zentralpräsidenten” vergab, an. Mit der Auszeichnung würdigt Auto Sport Schweiz das Engagement und die Leistungen der Vetreter eines Landes, das weder über eine international taugliche Rennstrecke verfügt noch auf die Unterstützung einer eigenen Automobilindustrie zählen kann.

Dass trotzdem immer wieder Schweizer Rennfahrer in die höchsten Gefilde des Motorsports aufsteigen, ist dem unermüdlichen Einsatz von Sponsoren und Mäzenen zu verdanken, aber auch der logisch aufgebauten Nachwuchs­förderung. So verdiente sich Neel Jani als 16-Jähriger seine Sporen in der Formel A (heute Formel Lista Junior) ab. Nachdem der Seeländer seine erste Saison im Automobilrennsport mit dem Gesamtsieg in dieser erschwinglichen Einstiegsserie gekrönt hatte, gewann er mehrere Rennen in der Formel Renault, in der GP2- und seit 2005 in der A1-Serie.

Ein grosses Verdienst an den Erfolgen des Schweizer A1-Teams gebührt Max Welti. Mit seiner langjährigen Tätigkeit als Rennfahrer und Manager hat der 56-jährige Zürcher viel zum Ansehen der Schweizer Automobilsports im In- und Ausland beigetragen.

Vendredi, le Team A1 Switzerland a été honoré par Auto Sport Suisse ainsi que par la Commission Nationale du Sport de ” l’Auto Sport Award” pour ses mérites particuliers au service du sport motorisé suisse.

En mai 2008, la Suisse avait gagné la “Coupe du Monde des Nations du Sport Motorisé”, qui comprend 20 courses en série A1GP. En tant que représentants de l’équipe victorieuse, son chef Max Welti et le pilote Neel Jani ont eu l’honneur de recevoir cette distinction vendredi soir à Berne.

“Nous nous sentons très honorés d’être nommés au même niveau que d’anciens gagnants de ce plus précieux trophée du sport motorisé suisse, tels que Jo Siffert, Clay Regazzoni, Peter Sauber et Ulrich Giezendanner”, se réjouissait Max Welti. “C’est avec d’autant plus d’enthousiasme que nous allons représenter à l’avenir la Suisse dans l’univers du sport automobile. Nous allons faire l’impossible, afin de défendre notre titre avec succès dans la quatrième saison A1 qui vient de débuter.”

L’Auto Sport Award renoue avec une vieille tradition de l’ancienne autorité du sport automobile qui à l’époque attribuait le “Prix du Président Central”. Avec cette distinction, Auto Sport Suisse honore l’engagement et les performances des représentants d’un pays qui ne dispose ni d’un circuit internationalement reconnu ni de l’appui d’une propre industrie automobile.

Que des pilotes suisses arrivent malgré tout à se profiler au plus haut niveau du sport motorisé est dû avant tout à l’appui continuel de sponsors et de mécènes, mais aussi à la promotion logique de la relève. C’est ainsi que Neel Jani, à l’age de seize ans, a gagné ses premiers galons en Formule A (aujourd’hui Formule Lista Junior). Après avoir couronné sa première saison dans le sport automobile avec la victoire finale dans cette série destinée aux débutants, le Seelandais a gagné plusieurs courses en Formule Renault, dans la série GP2 et puis dès 2005 dans la série A1.

Un grand mérite pour les succès de l’équipe suisse A1 appartient sans doute à Max Welti. Grâce à sa longue activité comme pilote et manager, le Zurichois de 56 ans a beaucoup contribué à la renommée du sport automobile suisse, aussi bien dans le pays qu’à l’étranger.
