The three contenders for the position of A1 Team South Africa rookie driver in the fifth round of the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport at Kyalami on February 22 are to undergo comprehensive assessments at the Discovery High Performance Centre of the Sports Science Institute in Cape Town on Monday and Tuesday (February 9 and 10).

Racing drivers Gavin Cronje (29), Cristiano Morgado (29) and Wesleigh Orr (20) – all former Rotax Max world karting champions – will undergo aerobic, strength, stamina, visual skill and mental assessments over the two days.

“The information gained from these professional physical assessments will assist in the decision as to which of the three talented young drivers will represent their country in Friday’s (February 20) rookie practice session before A1GP Gauteng on Sunday (February 22),” said Mike Carroll, general manager of A1 Team South Africa.

“In addition, the data is extremely important to enable these three top athletes to gauge and understand their levels of physical strength, fitness and eye skills and to plan their nutrition and hydration regimens. We recommend that any racing driver interested in progressing his or her career internationally and representing South Africa in A1GP should undergo these assessments at the world renowned Sports Science Institute in Cape Town.”

The Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in Midrand is gearing up to host its biggest motor racing weekend in recent years as it hosts the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport for the first time. It will also be the first time the new Powered by Ferrari single seater cars will be seen in action in South Africa.

More than 20 nations, including South Africa, will contest the two races on Sunday (February 20), a 25-minute sprint race at 1100 and a 70-minute feature race at 1500.

Spectators are reminded that while normal parking facilities will be available at Kyalami on Friday, a ‘park and ride’ system will be in operation on Saturday and Sunday, February 21 and 22, and will operate in conjunction with a road closure plan.

There will be no public parking within the precincts of Kyalami on the Saturday and Sunday. Instead, remote parking sites will be set up and dedicated shuttle buses will run between these sites and their respective gates on a continual basis, ensuring rapid movement of race fans from their car parks to the circuit and back again.

Saturday and Sunday ticket holders should ensure that they park in the remote parking that relates to their grandstand ticket or the general admission area. This system has been colour-coded for easier interpretation and each ‘zone’ will include its own parking area, grandstands and amenities, including food concession areas and toilets.

Grandstand and general admission tickets can be obtained only from branches of Cumputicket or at www.computicket.com.

Saturday’s qualifying will be broadcast live on SABC3 from 1330 to 1600 and Sunday’s sprint and feature races will be broadcast from 1300 to 1730 (the recorded sprint race will be screened from 1300 while the feature race will be live from 14h00).
