The Gold Coast Indy will now be known as the Super GP.

Announcing the name in Brisbane this morning Queensland Sports Minister Judy Spence said the new name heralded a new era for the iconic Gold Coast event.

“2009 is a significant turning point in both the history of Queensland and for this fantastic event and the new Super GP name is a combination of both the V8 Supercars and A1GP”.

The event necessitated a name change after the withdrawal of the Indy Racing League series from which the event had derived its name.

This year’s Super GP will be held from October 22-25 and will be one of the first rounds of the 2009/2010 A1GP world cup of motorsport and round 11 of the V8 Supercar championship series.

However, the event is still without a naming rights sponsor after last year’s naming rights holder Nikon decided not to renew its agreement for 2009.

“It is no secret the world is in tough economic times but we are having positive negotiations with corporate partners at all levels including naming rights and we are confident of being able to continually roll out positive news over the next few months,” said Super GP general manager Greg Hooton.

It will the 19th year of the motoring spectacular on the Gold Coast.
