A Mosaic of motorsport fanatics, petrol heads, speed demons and the like flocked to Joburg’s Kyalami racetrack over the weekend to experience the thrills and spills of the fifth season of the A1 Grand Prix World Cup of Motorsport.
Hosted in Gauteng for the first time, the event – held from 20 to 22 February – was expected to have vast economic potential for the region, where it will be held for the next three years.
Dressed in rainbow-coloured clothing and hoisting various national flags, on Sunday morning, 22 February hordes of fans, celebrities and journalists from around the world braved the scorching Joburg sun to support their country’s teams and their drivers, who delivered grand performances on the racetrack throughout the weekend.
Comfortably seated on the grandstands, while many others preferred to clutch the fence to get closer to the action, some fans yelled and cheered, “Adrian, we love you and you are hot!” to the A1 South Africa Team driver, Adrian Zaugg.
A cloudy day at first, the overcast skies cleared a few minutes before the whine of the V8 Ferrari engines rippled down eardrums, sending a vibrating chill down the tympanum and signalling the start of a fantastic race.
The engines of the single-seat-open-wheelers raced in the A1GP are mechanically congruent, with technical restrictions that limit their performance, reduce their speed and prevent the possibility of any team gaining an advantage through enhanced equipment.
And as the on-track action got under way yesterday morning, adrenaline became the name of the game as drivers showed their intrepid steering skills, making their countries proud. Octane burned, the air filled with smoke and the growl from the authoritative V8 engines reverberated around Kyalami, creating ear-splitting whines and sending the fans on the grandstands into a frenzy of euphoria and excitement.
