In first practice for the races of the World Cup of Motorsport in Portugal, Neel Jani didn’t even get to setting up the car of the Swiss A1GP team according to his preferences. A clutch failure left him sidelined after only nine laps. In the final classification, he ended up sixth.

In the first 15 minutes of practice, Jani left the track to his opponents. On one hand, as usual, Alexandre Imperatori had done his job in the rookie session without any problems and on the other hand, Jani himself had already acquired experience at the new, quite challenging race track near Portimão in the Algarve region while testing an Aston Martin LMP1 car in March, contrarily to most of the other drivers. Although the set-up of Swiss car was not yet like he wanted it, Jani topped the time sheets after 25 minutes. “Given the fact that the car had extreme oversteer and we had some trouble under braking, we can be satisfied for the time being”, Jani reported.

The attempt to cure the problems of the car during the second outing was already aborted after one lap due to the clutch failure. “Solving the problem in time will not be difficult for the Ferrari people”, said Jani. “However, we will have to start all over again with the set-up work on Saturday. I hope that we can get everything right before qualifying starts in the afternoon.”

Making up for the lack of track time in practice will not be easy for the Swiss team. While Jani only racked up 9 laps, other drivers completed as many as 50. In particular Nicolas Prost, Earl Bamber and A1GP-novices Andre Lotterer and Vitantonio Liuzzi gained a lot of experience, all four of them having been out in the rookie session in the morning already. Swiss team principal Max Welti remains upbeat in spite of the technical problem. “We will get that solved in time”, he is confident.

In spite of high and quite cold wind, the performance of the A1GP cars was impressive. Dutch driver Robert Doornbos completed a lap in 1:31.962 minutes (183/675 km/h). With that time, he was only slightly slower than McLaren-Mercedes and Ferrari in the Formula 1 test in December. Back then, Pedro de la Rosa set a best lap time of 1:30.080 while Luca Badoer reached 1:31.320.

Neel Jani kam im ersten Training zu den Rennen um den Nationen-Weltcup des Motorsports in Portugal nicht dazu, das Auto des Schweizer A1GP-Teams nach seinen Wünschen abzustimmen. Ein Kupplungsschaden setzte ihn nach nur neun Runden ausser Gefecht. Am Ende fand er sich auf Platz 6 wieder.

Während der ersten Viertelstunde des Trainings liess Jani seine Gegner gewähren. Zum einen hatte Alexandre Imperatori seinen Job im Rookie-Training wie gewohnt ohne Fehl und Tadel erledigt, zum andern hatte er selber auf der neuen, auch höchsten Ansprüchen genügenden Rennstrecke bei Portimão in der Algarve im Gegensatz zu fast allen andern Fahrern schon Erfahrungen gesammelt — bei Testfahrten im März auf einem LMP1-Aston Martin. Obschon das Schweizer Fahrzeug bei Weitem noch nicht nach seinem Geschmack abgestimmt war, stand Jani nach 25 Minuten mit der Bestzeit zu Buch. “Angesichts des Umstands, dass das Auto extrem übersteuerte und Probleme beim Bremsen aufgab, dürfen wir fürs erste zufrieden sein”, berichtete Jani.

Der Versuch, den Macken des Autos im zweiten Outing auf den Leib zu rücken, endete schon nach einer Runde wegen des Kupplungsdefekts. “Den Schaden rechtzeitig zu beheben, wird den Ferrari-Leuten nicht schwer fallen”, sagte Jani. “Mit der Abstimmungsarbeit werden wir am Samstag allerdings wieder fast von vorne beginnen müssen. Ich hoffe, dass dann bis zum Beginn des Qualifyings am Nachmittag alles zusammenpasst.”

Den Trainingsrückstand aufzuholen dürfte dem Schweizer Team indes nicht leicht fallen. Während Jani auf nur 9 Runden kam, drehten andere Fahrer bis zu 50. Wesentlich mehr Erkenntnisse gewannen insbesondere Nicolas Prost, Earl Bamber sowie die A1GP-Debütanten Andre Lotterer und Vitantonio Liuzzi, die schon am Vormittag als Rookies im Einsatz gestanden waren. Der Schweizer Teamchef Max Welti lässt den Kopf ob des technischen Missgeschicks nicht hängen: “Wir werden dies rechtzeitig hinkriegen”, glaubt der Zürcher.

Trotz starken und recht kalten Windes beeindruckte die Performance der A1GP-Autos. Der Holländer Robert Doornbos legte eine Runde in 1:31,962 Sekunden (183,675 km/h) zurück. Er war damit nur unwesentlich langsamer als der McLaren-Mercedes und der Ferrari bei Formel-1-Test im Dezember. Pedro de la Rosa kam damals auf 1:30,080, Luca Badoer auf 1:31,320.

Lors du premier entraînement pour les courses de la coupe du monde des nations du sport motorisé au Portugal, Neel Jani n’a pas réussi à régler comme il l’aurait souhaité la monoplace de l’équipe suisse A1GP. Un embrayage cassé l’a contraint à l’arrêt après neuf tours seulement. Il a néanmoins terminé sixième.

Au cours du premier quart-d’heure de l’entraînement, Jani a laissé faire ses adversaires. D’un côté, Alexandre Imperatori a comme d’habitude effectué son travail aux essais rookie sans faute et sans reproche et de l’autre, Jani disposait déjà, contrairement à la plupart des autres pilotes, d’une certaine expérience sur ce nouveau circuit très exigeant près de Portimão en Algarve, grâce à des essais en mars sur une Aston Martin LMP1. Bien que le véhicule suisse ne fût de loin pas encore réglé comme il l’aurait souhaité, Jani a réalisé au bout de 25 minutes le meilleur temps. “Malgré le fait que la voiture survirait extrêmement et posait des problèmes au freinage, nous sommes pour l’instant contents”, rapportait Jani.

La tentative d’éliminer les caprices de la voiture au deuxième “outing” s’est terminée déjà après un tour précisément par une cassure de l’embrayage. “De réparer le dégât sera chose facile pour les gens de Ferrari”, disait Jani. “Toutefois samedi, nous devrons pratiquement recommencer tout le travail de réglage et j’espère que tout sera parfaitement en ordre pour le début des qualifications l’après-midi.”

Il sera cependant tâche difficile pour l’équipe suisse de rattraper le retard accumulé à l’entraînement. Alors que Jani n’a pu réaliser que neuf tours, d’autres pilotes en ont fait cinquante. Ce sont particulièrement Nicolas Prost, Earl Bamber ainsi que les débutants en A1GP André Lotterer et Vitantonio Liuzzi qui fonctionnaient déjà le matin comme rookie, qui ont pu acquérir des connaissances supplémentaires. Le chef de l’équipe suisse Max Welti ne se laisse toutefois pas décourager par ce contre-temps technique: “Nous allons être prêts à temps”, a clamé le zurichois.

Malgré un vent fort et plutôt froid, la performance des voitures A1GP a surpris en bien. Le hollandais Robert Doornbos a par exemple tourné en 1′31″962 (183,675 kmh). Il n’était ainsi guère plus lent que les McLaren-Mercedes et les Ferrari lors de tests de Formule 1 en décembre. A l’époque, Pedro de la Rosa a tourné en 1′30″080 et Luca Badoer en 1′31″320.
