In qualifying for the two races of the World Cup of Motorsport in the Portuguese Algarve region, the Swiss A1GP team only just avoided a disaster.

In the first and second qualifying heat, Neel Jani failed to complete one lap due to a red flag and a technical problem. As a result, he has to start from the back of the grid for the sprint race. Later on, Jani also had to miss out on the first attempt for the feature race. The Swiss team finally just avoided a real disaster. In the closing stages, Jani completed a lap that put him third on the grid for the feature race.

The first qualifying heat had to be interrupted after Chinese driver Tung had spun out. When the action resumed, there wasn’t enough time for Jani, as well as five other drivers, to complete a flying lap. In the second heat, the Swiss only completed a few hundred metres. The engine stalled unexpectedly due to a burned fuse of the main fuel pump, as the team found out later.

Once the Swiss car was finally delivered in the team’s pit box on a breakdown lorry, the first qualifying heat for the feature race was already underway and Jani was sidelined once again. At least, the car was ready again for the final heat. Jani showed his potential once again, setting a lap time that was only beaten by The Netherlands and Ireland in the end.

“In normal conditions, I would most probably have been on pole position”, said Neel Jani. “With all the bad luck that we encountered today, I am also very happy with third place. It will allow me to race for victory in the feature race. This will not be possible in the sprint race of only 25 minutes. We are still thinking about how we will go about in this race.”

For Max Welti, too, it is clear that Jani will not be able to do much in the sprint race. “Therefore, our first goal will be having our car in good shape for the feature race”, the Swiss team principal explains. “When we succeed, there is no doubt for me that Neel will make it onto the podium and thus limit the damage. With his excellent lap at the end of qualifying, he has shown that he is at least par with his fiercest opponents from a driver’s point of view.”

Das Schweizer A1GP-Team entging in den Qualifyings für die beiden Rennen um den Nationen-Weltcup des Motorsports in der Algarve (Por) im letzten Moment einem Desaster.

Im ersten und im zweiten Qualifikations-Segment brachte Neel Jani wegen einer Roten Flagge und eines technischen Defekts keine einzige Runde zu Stande. Er muss daher den Sprint am Schluss des Feldes aufnehmen. Jani verpasste hernach auch den ersten Versuch fürs Feature Race. Dem Super-Gau entging das Schweizer Team schliesslich nur knapp. Jani legte gleichsam im letzten Moment noch eine Runde hin, die zu Startplatz 3 für das Feature Race reichte.

Nach einem Dreher des Chinesen Tung musste das erste Qualifying unterbrochen werden. Als die Piste wieder freigegeben wurde, reichte die Zeit für Jani (so wie für fünf weitere Fahrer) nicht mehr für eine fliegende Runde. Im zweiten Teil kam der Schweizer nur ein paar hundert Meter weit. Der Motor starb unversehens ab — wegen einer durchgebrannten Sicherung der Hauptbenzinpumpe, wie sich später heraus stellte.

Als das Schweizer Auto endlich per Kranwagen an die Box zurückgebracht wurde, war der erste Teil des Qualifyings für das Hauptrennen bereits im Gang und Jani abermals zur Untätigkeit verurteilt. Wenigstens war der Wagen für den finalen Versuch wieder fahrtüchtig. Jani liess einmal mehr sein Potenzial aufblitzen, indem er auf Anhieb eine Zeit markierte, die später nur noch Holland und Irland unterboten.

“Unter normalen Umständen hätte ich ziemlich sicher die Pole-Position geschafft”, sagte Neel Jani. “Bei allem dem Missgeschick, das uns heute widerfuhr, bin ich aber auch mit Platz 3 sehr zufrieden. Er wird mir erlauben, im Feature Race um den Sieg zu kämpfen. Im nur 25 Minuten dauernden Sprint wird dies nicht möglich sein. Wie überlegen uns noch, wie wir das Rennen angehen sollen.” Als taktische Variante böte sich an, den Sprint mit geringer Benzinladung in Angriff zu nehmen und so auf den einen Punkt auszugehen, der für die schnellste Runde vergeben wird.

Auch für Max Welti ist klar, dass Jani im Sprint kaum auf einen grünen Zweig kommen kann. “Wir werden in erster Linie darauf achten, mit einem intakten Auto zum Feature Race antreten zu können”, erklärte der Schweizer Teamchef. “Wenn dies gelingt, zweifle ich nicht daran, dass Neel aufs Podest kommt und so den Schaden in Grenzen halten kann. Mit seiner Superrunde am Schluss des Qualifyings hat er gezeigt, dass er fahrerisch auch seinen härtesten Gegnern zumindest ebenbürtig ist.”

Lors des qualifications pour les deux courses de la coupe du monde des nations du sport motorisé, l’équipe suisse A1GP a échappé au dernier moment à la catastrophe.

Dans les deux premières séries des qualifications, Neel Jani n’a pas réussi un seul tour en raison d’un drapeau rouge et d’une défectuosité technique. Au sprint, il est ainsi condamné à partir de la dernière position. Par la suite, Jani a également manqué le premier essai pour la course principale. L’équipe suisse l’a donc échappé belle. Au dernier moment, pourtant, Jani a encore réalisé un tour qui lui a permis d’obtenir tout de même la troisième position sur la grille de départ pour la course principale.

Après un tête-à-queue du chinois Tung, la première séance de qualification a dû être interrompue. Quand la piste a de nouveau été libérée, le temps était trop court pour Jani (ainsi que pour six autres coureurs) pour un tour rapide. Dans la deuxième série, le suisse n’a pu faire que quelques centaines de mètres: Arrêt impromptu du moteur — dû à un fusible sauté de la pompe à essence principale.

Quand le véhicule suisse a finalement été ramené au stand par la grue, la première partie des qualifications pour la course principale était déjà en cours et Jani était une fois de plus condamné à l’inactivité. La voiture était néanmoins de nouveau prête pour l’essai final. Jani, une fois de plus, a fait étalage de son potentiel en réalisant un temps que seuls les Pays-Bas et l’Irlande étaient en mesure d’améliorer par la suite.

“Dans des conditions normales, j’aurais sans doute pu atteindre la pole-position”, disait Neel Jani. “Mais avec tous les malheurs qui nous sont tombés dessus aujourd’hui, je suis finalement content de la troisième place. Ceci me permettra de me battre pour la victoire dans la course prinipale. Pour le sprint qui ne dure que 25 minutes, ce ne sera pas possible. Nous sommes en train de réfléchir sur la stratégie à adopter pour la course.” Une des variantes tactiques serait d’entamer le sprint avec un minimum d’essence pour ainsi viser le point qui est attribué pour le tour le plus rapide.

Pour Max Welti également il est clair que Jani ne peut guère espérer mieux. “En premier lieu, nous ferons tout pour aligner une voiture intacte pour la Feature Race”, déclarait le chef de l’équipe suisse. “Si cela réussit, je ne doute nullement que Neel sera sur le podium et pourra ainsi limiter les dégâts. Par son tour superbe à la fin des qualifications, il a montré qu’il est du point de vue pilotage au moins aussi bon que ces adversaires les plus directs.”
