A1 Team Ireland regained the lead in the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport this morning when Adam Carroll converted his 3rd place qualifying start into a superb 2nd placed finish behind winner Robert Doornbos. The Irish star also set fasttest lap, gaining an additional vital point. Pole sitter Vitantonio Liuzzi was overtaken by Holland on the track, and by Ireland during a typically slick pit stop.
Team Switzerland, Ireland’s closest rival in the series, finished out of the points after starting last and then incurring a 30 second penalty for pit-stopping outside the pit stop window. Team Portugal finished 3rd behind Ireland, maintaining its championship hopes.
“It all went fine,” said Carroll. “I made an ok start – the grip levels were much higher than I expected – but then settled into 3rd and the pit stop went off perfectly, enabling us to jump Italy. I couldn’t really stay with Robert (Doornbos, Netherlands) but we’re in good shape and the fastest lap was the icing on the cake. Now for the Feature Race!”
