The swine flu virus is also affecting the World Cup of Motorsport: the season final, which was scheduled to take place in Mexico City on May 24th, had to be cancelled due to health-political reasons. Therefore, the grand final will already be taking place at Brands Hatch, south-east of London, this weekend.

Three out of 21 teams still have chances of winning the World Cup. These are defending champions Switzerland plus Ireland and Portugal. The Netherlands only have theoretical chances. Going into the final two races of the season, Switzerland is leading with 88 points from Ireland (86), Portugal (82) and The Netherlands (66). There are still 27 points at stake at Brands Hatch. However, it has to be considered that each team has to drop one score: the worst result of every team from any two-race event will not be considered. Ireland and Portugal are in a slightly better position, because all the points they have scored will be counted in the UK, whereas Switzerland has to drop four points, The Netherlands six. In the current “net-results”, Ireland would currently be in the lead with 86 points, followed by Switzerland (84), Portugal (82) and The Netherlands (60).

In the last two years, the A1GP season already ended at Brands Hatch. The venue in Kent County is perfectly suited as an arena for the showdown. Brands Hatch also hosted Formula 1 races from 1964 till 1986. The 3.7 kilometres long track is generally being considered as “tricky” or “challenging”. Many drivers have experienced this themselves. Among them are Swiss Neel Jani and Sébastien Buemi. Jani was hit by American Scott Speed on the first lap of the feature race in September 2005, Buemi collided in the sprint race in spring 2007 with Swiss-born South-African Adrian Zaugg.

For Jani, good memories of Brands Hatch clearly prevail. With two successful races, he bagged the title there last year. This Sunday, however, his task is not just to bring a comfortable points’ advantage home. “In order to defend the title successfully, we have to exceed ourselves”, Jani expects. “The track is not only unusually fast, it is also technically difficult. Here, the experience of every lap counts. From that point of view, I have a slight disadvantage compared to Irishman Adam Carroll.”

Max Welti also knows that his team is facing a difficult task: “We have to make up a net disadvantage of two points to Ireland. However, we are feeling well prepared and we are confident”, the Swiss team principal said. “Of course, our starting point is far less comfortable than last year. On the other hand, Neel is mentally very strong, so that he can take on anything. He will be highly motivated and focussed. Unfortunately, Brands Hatch isn’t particularly suited for overtaking. Therefore, we are already aiming for a top position in qualifying. Hopefully, we will not be affected by changing weather conditions that we have had so often in the UK.”

After an action-packed weekend, Neel Jani already arrived in the UK on Monday. On Saturday, he had put on a fantastic show with demonstration runs in a Formula 1 car to celebrate the opening of the western part of the new circular road of the city of Zurich: accelerations of up to 280 km/h, braking in only a few metres and doughnuts with smoke coming off the tyres. Afterwards, Jani got standing ovations from tens of thousands of spectators. Immediately after that, Jani was taken to Zürich airport by helicopter, flew to France to test the Aston Martin at Le Mans and travelled on to England on Monday to have a few days to prepare for the A1GP final.

Das Schweinegrippe-Virus behelligt auch den Nationen-Weltcup des Motorsports: Die am 24. Mai in Mexiko City geplante Schlussveranstaltung musste aus gesundheitspolitischen Erwägungen abgesagt werden. Somit steigt das Finale Grande bereits am kommenden Wochenende in Brands Hatch im Südosten von London.

Intakte Chancen, den Weltcup zu gewinnen, haben noch 3 von 21 Teams. Es sind dies der Titelverteidiger Schweiz, Irland und Portugal. Die Möglichkeiten für Holland sind nur noch theoretischer Natur. Vor den beiden letzten Rennen führt die Schweiz mit 88 Punkten vor Irland (86), Portugal (82) und Holland (66). In Brands Hatch werden noch 27 Punkte vergeben. Zu berücksichtigen ist, dass am Schluss ein Streichresultat in Abzug gebracht wird; das schlechteste Gesamtergebnis jedes Teams aus den zwei Rennen einer Station entfällt. Irland und Portugal befinden sich insofern in einer etwas besseren Situation, als ihnen alle in England gewonnenen Punkte angerechnet werden. Die Schweiz muss mit dem Abzug von 4 Punkten kalkulieren, Holland mit 6. In der aktuellen “Netto-Rangliste” läge also derzeit Irland (86) an der Spitze, gefolgt von der Schweiz (84), Portugal (82) und Holland (60).

Schon in den beiden vergangenen Jahren war die A1GP-Saison in Brands Hatch abgeschlossen worden. Als Arena für den Showdown eignet sich die Strecke in der Grafschaft Kent, auf der zwischen 1964 und 1986 auch Formel-1-WM-Rennen ausgetragen wurden, gut. Die 3,7 km lange Runde wird gemeinhin als “tückisch”, “anspruchsvoll” oder “heikel” apostrophiert. Etliche Fahrer wissen ein Lied davon zu singen. Zu ihnen gehören auch die Schweizer Neel Jani und Sébastien Buemi. Der Berner wurde im September 2005 in der ersten Runde des Hauptrennens vom Amerikaner Scott Speed gerammt, und der Waadtländer kollidierte im Frühjahr 2007 im Sprint mit dem Südafrika-Schweizer Adrian Zaugg.

Bei Jani überwiegen indes die guten Erinnerungen an Brands Hatch deutlich. Mit zwei wohlgelungenen Auftritten brachte er dort vor einem Jahr den Titel ins Trockene. Am Sonntag kann er sich allerdings nicht damit begnügen, einen komfortablen Punktevorsprung nach Hause zu schaukeln. “Um den Titel erfolgreich zu verteidigen, müssen wir über uns hinaus wachsen”, vermutet Jani. “Die Strecke ist nicht nur ungewöhnlich schnell, sondern weist auch einen hohen technischen Schwierigkeitsgrad auf. Hier zählt jede Runde aus dem Erfahrungsschatz. Insofern bin ich gegenüber dem Iren Adam Carroll ein Bisschen im Nachteil.”

Auch Max Welti ist sich bewusst, dass dem Team eine schwierige Aufgabe harrt: “Wir müssen auf Irland einen Nettorückstand von zwei Punkten wettmachen, fühlen uns aber dafür gerüstet und sind zuversichtlich”, sagte der Schweizer Teamchef. “Die Ausgangslage ist natürlich wesentlich weniger komfortabel als vor einem Jahr. Neel ist jedoch mental derart stark, dass ich ihm alles zutraue. Er wird hoch motiviert und konzentriert zu Werk gehen. Leider eignet sich Brands Hatch nicht sonderlich gut für Überholmanöver. Wir trachten daher schon in den Qualifyings nach Spitzenplätzen. Hoffentlich kommen uns die in England üblichen Wetterlaunen nicht in die Quere.”

Neel Jani ist nach einem ereignisreichen Wochenende bereits am Montag in England eingetroffen. Am Samstag hatte er anlässlich der Eröffnung der Westumfahrung der Stadt Zürich einen phantastischen Auftritt mit Demonstrationsfahrten und Showeinlagen in einem Formel-1-Wagen auf dem neuen Autobahnstück: Beschleunigen bis 280 km/h, Abbremsen innert wenigen Metern und Pirouetten mit rauchenden Reifen. Am Ende wurde dem Berner von Zehntausenden von Zuschauern eine Standing Ovation zuteil. Jani wurde gleich anschliessend per Helikopter nach Kloten gebracht, flog nach Frankreich zu Testfahrten in Le Mans mit dem Aston Martin und am Montag nach England, wo er sich ein paar Tage lang geistig auf das A1GP-Finale einstellte.

Le virus de la grippe porcine fait également du tort à la coupe du monde des nations du sport motorisé: La manifestation finale programmée pour le 24 mai à Mexico City a en effet dû être annulée en raison de mesures sanitaires exceptionnelles. Ainsi, la “Grande Finale” aura lieu déjà dimanche prochain à Brands Hatch au sud-est de Londres.

Il reste actuellement 3 équipes sur 21 a avoir des chances réelles de remporter la coupe du monde. Il s’agit de la Suisse, tenante du titre, de l’Irlande et du Portugal, alors que les possibilités pour les Pays-Bas ne sont plus que théoriques. Avant les deux dernières courses, la Suisse mène le bal avec 88 points devant l’Irlande (86), le Portugal (82) et les Pays-Bas (66). A Brands Hatch, il reste 27 points à attribuer. Il faut tenir compte du fait qu’à la fin, le plus mauvais résultat de chaque équipe sera biffé, c’est-à-dire le moins bon score obtenu dans les deux courses d’une étape. L’Irlande et le Portugal se trouvent de ce fait dans une situation plus confortable du moment que tous les points obtenus en Angleterre leur seront attribués entièrement. La Suisse, par contre, devra compter avec une soustraction de quatre points et les Pays-Bas avec une déduction de six points. Dans le classement “net” actuel, l’Irlande se trouverait ainsi en tête avec 86 points, suivie par la Suisse (84), le Portugal (82) et les Pays-Bas (60).

Les deux dernières années déjà, la saison A1GP a pris fin à Brands Hatch. Le circuit situé dans le comté de Kent, et qui était entre 1964 et 1986 le théâtre de courses CM de Formule 1, se prête idéalement à cet évènement. Le parcours de 3,7 km est généralement jugé de capricieux, d’exigeant ou encore de délicat. Certains pilotes en savent quelque chose. En font partie les suisses Neel Jani et Sébastien Buemi. En septembre 2005, le bernois s’est fait sortir déjà au premier tour de la course principale par l’americain Scott Speed, et le vaudois est, de son côté, est entré en collision lors du sprint au printemps 2007 avec le suisse d’Afrique du Sud, Adrian Zaugg.

Chez Jani, les bons souvenirs de Brands Hatch dépassent néanmoins largement les mauvais. Avec deux entrées en scène réussies l’année passée, il s’y est adjugé le titre. Dimanche, il ne suffira cependant pas de récolter une avance de points confortable. “Afin de défendre le titre avec succès, nous devrons tenter l’impossible”, suppose Jani. “Le circuit est non seulement extrêmement rapide, mais comporte aussi des difficultés techniques multiples. Ici, chaque tour couru antérieurement a son importance. Sous ce rapport je suis légèrement désavantagé face à l’irlandais Adam Carroll.”

Max Welti aussi est conscient qu’une tâche difficile attend l’équipe. “Nous devons rattraper deux points “net” sur l’Irlande, mais nous sommes parfaitement prêts et confiants”, dèclarait le chef du team suisse. “La situation est évidemment moins confortable qu’il y a une année. Toutefois, Neel est mentalement tellement fort que je le crois capable de réussir. Il est hautement motivé et concentré. Malheureusement, Brands Hatch ne se prête pas facilement à des manoeuvres de dépassements. Nous viserons donc des places en tête dès les qualifications. Espérons que les caprices de la météo habituels à l’Angleterre ne nous gêneront pas trop.”

Après un weekend riche en évènements, Neel Jani est arrivé en Angleterre déjà lundi. A l’occasion de l’inauguration du contournement ouest de la ville de Zurich, il a eu samedi un succès phantastique avec des courses de démonstration et de show dans une monoplace de Formule 1 sur le nouveau tronçon de l’autoroute: accélerer jusqu’à 280 km/h, freinages sur seulement quelques mètres et des pirouettes avec des gommes fumantes. A la fin de la démonstration, des dizaines de milliers de spectateurs ont honoré le bernois par une “standing ovation”. Jani a été transporté ensuite par hélicoptère à Kloten pour s’envoler direction la France afin d’effectuer au Mans des essais avec une Aston Martin. Et lundi, il arriva en Angleterre où il a pu, le temps de quelques jours, se préparer mentalement pour la grande finale A1GP.
