A1 Team Great Britain with driver, Dan Clarke, will line up in 13th place on the grid for the Sprint race and 14th place for the Feature race in the final race weekend of the fourth season of the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport, following the qualifying session at Brands Hatch circuit in Kent, the historic English racetrack which hosts the seventh and final round of the Series.
A1 Team Great Britain was determined to use every minute of track time to be as prepared as possible for the final two races in the 2008/09 A1GP World Cup of Motorsport calendar. Running on used tyres for the final practice session to keep three sets for the all-important qualifying, Clarke set strong, consistent lap times and worked on improving the balance of the car for the afternoon session rather than focusing on outright speed and low lap times.
Clarke put in a superb lap for his first run to determine the Sprint race positions, with third quickest time. However with just under half the field opting to use the PowerBoost for the Sprint race he was pushed back to 13th place for the Sprint race grid. On his third of the four laps Clarke put in a lap which gave him a provisional 11th place on the grid. For the final lap the British team used the PowerBoost option, but a yellow flag after Switzerland crashed out, left Clarke having to back out of his lap and knowing they were not able to improve on his earlier run, the team opted to abort the run, forced to settle for 14th place on the grid.
Clarke said of today’s efforts, “We showed we had the pace with our third fastest lap in the first run, but with the PowerBoost lottery, we were bumped down the grid for the Sprint race. For the Feature race we put all our eggs in one basket and played our PowerBoost card for the final run. Unfortunately Switzerland brought out a yellow flag just before I started my flying lap and because we had to back off significantly, there was no way that we were going to improve on our first Feature race run. Now we’ll have to show true British grit and put everything we can into racing to the front.”
The A1GP World Cup of Motorsport concludes tomorrow with the final two races of the season set to entertain the spectators at the Kent circuit. With a full schedule of racing throughout the day and the headline 70 minute Feature race with its mandatory tyre change pit stops, the fans will be given plenty to cheer about. The morning Sprint race will give a flavour of A1GP and is also expected to bring plenty of overtaking action to the Brands Hatch track.
