Qualifying for the two final A1GP races at Brands Hatch didn’t quite go as planned for the Swiss team. With grid positions eight (sprint) and four (feature race), the situation for the battle for the title in the World Cup of Motorsport isn’t excellent – and even less so bearing in mind that Ireland will be on pole both times. Portugal, the third title candidate, didn’t do any better with fifth and ninth place.

“I am not too disappointed”, said Neel Jani. “In the practice sessions, it became apparent that we weren’t entirely competitive here. The understeering of the car and the loss of time in slow corners obviously have their effect on a single qualifying lap. Now, the only thing to do for us in the race is driving with maximum attack. Maybe, a suitable strategy will also allow us to catch up a little bit.”

Portuguese Filipe Albuquerque had a similar problem as Swiss Neel Jani. Both are receiving technical support from the same crew. The Portuguese, too, were mainly too slow in the first section of the track. The cars of the Irish and the Dutch, who are also working together, have a much better handling.

Team principal Max Welti was happy with Jani’s performance in qualifying for the sprint race, he said. “Of course, it is a long way from eighth on the grid up to the front, but we decided not yet to use the power boost function which is available for one single qualifying lap.” Among the drivers who ran without the additional power boost, Jani was third fastest behind Irishman Adam Carroll and Dutch driver Jeroen Bleekemolen.

After that, the Swiss team decided to use the power boost in the first part of qualifying for the feature race already. “Indeed, that is not usual”, Max Welti explained, “but we wanted to play it safe. At Brands Hatch, there is always the risk of a red flag. Such a situation would have been appropriate after the accident of the Brazilian driver. The fact that there were only yellow flags helped Ireland.” Neel Jani initially was on top of the leaderboard. In the second session, he was only outpaced by the Irish, the Monegasque and the Dutch driver. The fact that the fire extinguisher activated itself in the Swiss car at the end turned out to be irrelevant.

Following the cancellation of the season finale, originally scheduled for Mexico on May 24th, but called off due to the swine flu, the decision in the battle for the title in the World Cup of Motorsport will fall in England on Sunday. Going into the two final rounds, the three remaining title candidates Switzerland, Ireland and Portugal are only six points apart. Now, the drop-score ruling will also come into effect. For every team, the worst total score from any two races at one venue will be dropped. For Switzerland, these currently are the four points won in the season opener at Zandvoort. Ireland and Portugal both had a non-score already and therefore don’t have to drop any points.

Die Qualifyings zu den zwei letzten A1GP-Rennen in Brands Hatch sind nicht ganz nach dem Gusto des Schweizer Teams verlaufen. Mit den Startplätzen 8 (Sprint) und 4 (Hauptrennen) ist die Ausgangslage im Kampf um den Nationen-Weltcup des Motorsports nicht optimal — zumal beim Umstand, dass Irland beide Male auf der Pole-Position stehen wird. Portugal, dem dritten Titelkandidaten, erging es mit den Plätzen 5 und 9 auch nicht besser.

“Allzu sehr enttäuscht bin ich nicht”, erklärte Neel Jani. “In den Trainings hatte sich abgezeichnet, dass wir hier nicht ganz mitzuhalten vermögen. Das Untersteuern des Autos und der Zeitverlust in den langsamen Kurven wirkt sich auf einer einzigen Qualifikationsrunde natürlich aus. Jetzt bleibt uns in den Rennen nichts anderes übrig, als volle Attacke zu fahren. Auch mit einer geeigneten Strategie lässt sich vielleicht noch etwas Boden gut machen.”

Dem selben Problem wie der Schweizer Neel Jani begegnete auch der Portugiese Filipe Albuquerque. Beide werden technisch von der gleichen Crew betreut. Auch sie waren vor allem im ersten Sektor der Strecke zu langsam. Wesentlich besser benahmen sich die Autos der Iren und der Holländer, die ebenfalls eine Gemeinschaft bilden.

Er sei mit Janis Leistung im Sprint-Qualifying zufrieden, sagte Teamchef Max Welti. “Natürlich ist der Weg von Platz 8 an die Spitze lang, aber wir zogen es vor, den für eine einzige Qualifikationsrunde zur Verfügung stehenden Power-Boost noch nicht zu verwenden.” Unter jenen Fahrern, die ohne zusätzlichen Leistungsschub unterwegs waren, erreichte Jani die drittbeste Zeit hinter dem Iren Adam Carroll und dem Holländer Jeroen Bleekemolen.

Das Schweizer Team entschloss sich danach, den Power-Boost schon im ersten Teil des Qualifyings für das Hauptrennen einzusetzen. “Das ist zwar nicht üblich”, erklärte Max Welti, “aber wir wollten auf Nummer Sicher gehen. In Brands Hatch besteht immer die Gefahr einer Roten Flagge. Diese zu zeigen, wäre nach dem Unfall des Brasilianers durchaus am Platz gewesen. Dass es nur Gelb gab, kam Irland zupass.” Neel Jani stand denn auch zunächst mit der Bestzeit zu Buch. Im zweiten Teil wurde er nur noch vom Iren, dem Monegassen und dem Holländer übertrumpft. Dass im Schweizer Auto zum Schluss noch der Feuerlöscher losging, spielte keine Rolle mehr.

Nachdem das am 24. Mai in Mexiko geplante Saisonfinale wegen der Schweinegrippe abgesagt werden musste, fällt die Entscheidung um den Gesamtsieg in Nationen-Weltcup des Motorsports am Sonntag in England. Die drei verbliebenen Titelkandidaten, die Schweiz, Irland und Portugal, liegen vor den beiden letzten Rennen nur sechs Punkte auseinander. Zum Zug kommt nun auch die Streichresultate-Regelung. Jedem Team wird das schlechteste Gesamtergebnis aus den zwei Rennen eines Austragungsorts gestrichen. Für die Schweiz sind dies zur Zeit die vier zu Saisonbeginn in Zandvoort gewonnen Punkte. Irland und Portugal haben bereits einen “Nuller” auf dem Konto und daher keinen Abzug zu gewärtigen.

Les qualifications pour les deux dernières courses A1GP à Brands Hatch n’ont pas été tout à fait du goût de l’équipe suisse. Avec des places 8 (sprint) et 4 (course principale), les chances dans la lutte pour le titre de la coupe du monde des nations du sport motorisé ne sont guère optimales, surtout que l’Irlande occupera les deux fois la pole-position. Le troisième prétendant au titre, le Portugal, n’a pas été plus heureux avec des places 5 et 9.

“Je ne suis pas trop déçu”, expliquait Neel Jani. “Déjà lors des entraînements, nous avons dû constater que nous serons pas en mesure de tenir tête aux meilleurs. Une voiture qui sous-vire et une perte de temps dans les virages lents ont évidemment des conséquences sur un seul tour de qualification. A présent, tout ce qui nous reste à faire dans les courses c’est d’attaquer à outrance. Avec une bonne stratégie aussi, nous pourrons éventuellement refaire du terrain.”

D’ailleurs, le portugais Filipe Albuquerque était, lui aussi, confronté au même problème que le suisse Neel Jani. Les deux sont en effet entre les mains de la même équipe technique. Le portugais également était trop lent, surtout dans le premier secteur du circuit. Les voitures des irlandais et des hollandais se sont comportées bien mieux. Ces deux teams forment également une unité technique.

Max Welti, le chef d’équipe, disait qu’il était assez content avec la performance de Jani dans la qualification pour le sprint. “Evidemment, la route depuis la huitième place à la tête est longue, mais nous avons préféré ne pas utiliser le ‘power-boost’, à disposition pour un seul tour de qualification.” Parmi ceux des coureurs qui n’ont pas utilisé cette poussée supplémentaire, Jani a eu le troisième temps derrière l’irlandais Adam Carroll et le hollandais Jeroen Bleekemolen.

L’équipe suisse s’est décidée par la suite d’employer le power-boost déjà dans la permière partie des qualifications pour la course principale. “Ce n’est pas d’usage, je le sais”, expliquait Max Welti, “mais nous avons voulu assurer nos arrières. A Brands Hatch, le risque d’un drapeau rouge est permanent. De le montrer aurait été indiqué après l’accident du brésilien. Ce n’était que le jaune, ce qui arrangait l’Irlande.” Neel Jani a d’ailleurs été crédité dans un premier temps du meilleur chrono. Dans la deuxième partie, il n’a été surpassé que par l’irlandais, le monegasque et le hollandais. Que dans la voiture suisse l’extincteur de feu se soit mis en route tout seul n’avait plus aucune incidence.

Etant donné que la finale de la saison programmée pour le 24 mai à Mexico a dû être annulée en raison de la grippe porcine, la décision finale pour la victoire dans la coupe du monde des nations du sport motorisé tombera donc déjà dimanche en Angleterre. Les trois candidats au titre, à savoir la Suisse, l’Irlande et le Portugal ne sont séparés que par six points avant les deux dernières courses. Le règlement sur les résultats à biffer entrera aussi en ligne de compte. Cela veut dire que pour chaque équipe, le résultat le plus mauvais de deux courses d’une étape sera biffé. Pour la Suisse, il s’agit-là des quatre points gagnés en début de saison à Zandvoort. Par contre, l’Irlande et Portugal pourront garder la totalité des points puisque une course à zéro points leur a déjà été comptabilisée.
