A1 Team Malaysia fans from around the world have proven their loyalty and support for the team by casting their votes in the recent A1GP.com awards. The team is delighted to win the Most Improved Team award, one of the four categories which were voted for by A1GP fans.
The Most Improved Team award recognised A1 Team Malaysia’s achievements in the fourth season of the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport series. A disappointing 15th place in the overall standings for the third season was eclipsed by the team taking a well deserved 6th place by the end of season four. Fairuz Fauzy took the team’s fifth race victory in the first race of the fourth season and backed this up with a points haul for the season from 3 podium finishes, 8 points scoring finishes and a fastest lap.
A1 Team Malaysia worked hard between the third and fourth seasons, focusing on preparing the new generation A1GP ‘Powered by Ferrari’ car, which made its debut at Zandvoort. The team’s efforts were quickly repaid with Fauzy taking the first race win with the new car at the Dutch track in some of the most difficult racing conditions faced by A1GP drivers. The Malaysian driver coped admirably with pouring rain to record his first A1GP race win.
Over the course of the season the team maintained their high level of commitment and continued to develop the car with Fauzy and rookie driver, Aaron Lim. Consistency of results was a major factor in the team’s success, with Fauzy scoring points at each event.
Jack Cunningham, Chief Executive, A1 Team Malaysia, said of the team’s award, “We are very proud to have been voted Most Improved Team this season thus achieving recognition for our effort. The award is especially significant as it was the fans that were voting for us. A1GP has become more and more competitive each season and it has taken a dedicated, highly professional team of people to be one of the front running teams.
“A1GP.com says ‘the team looks to become championship contenders in season five’. That has always been our goal. We’ll need to continue with our hard work to stay in the top five, but I know that with the team we have and with their total commitment and determination, we’ll be putting 100% effort in for next season.”
The new season of the A1GP series kicks off later this year and A1 Team Malaysia will return to represent the nation in this high profile, international single seater championship, which uniquely pits country against country for national honours.
