A1GP Race Weekend
An A1GP weekend covers 4 days, Thursday to Sunday.
Thursday: This is the PR day when some of the drivers get involved in something relevant to the country, or area, of the race event.
Friday: First up is the Rookie Practice sessions followed in the afternoon by the nominated driver practice session.
Saturday: Final Practice session in the morning and Qualifying sessions in the afternoon.
Sunday: First up is the shorter Sprint Race followed later by the full length Feature Race.
Practice Sessions:
Two 30-minute rookie sessions are held each Friday morning during race weekends to allow young and less experienced drivers from developing nations to get to grips with the powerful 600-bhp A1GP cars and challenging tracks the series visits.
Two one-hour general practice sessions are held for all other A1GP drivers on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.
Qualifying:
Qualifying for the Sprint and Feature race takes place on Saturday afternoon across four 10-minute sessions consisting of one out lap then one flying lap and then one in lap. Teams can select one of the four sessions to use power boost for the whole flying lap.
Qualifying Sprint:
The grid position for the Sprint race shall be determined in the first two qualifying segments. The fastest lap time set by each team in either of the first two qualifying segments will determine the grid positions. The team with the fastest time will be on pole, the team with second fastest time will be second on the grid, and so on.
Qualifying Feature:
The grid position for the Feature race shall be determined in the final two qualifying segments. The fastest lap time set by each team in either of the final two qualifying segments will determine the grid positions. The team with the fastest time will be on pole, the team with second fastest time will be second on the grid, and so on.
If no lap time is set during the relevant qualifying then teams concerned may be permitted to start the Sprint race and/or Feature race from the back of the grid in the order determined by the Stewards using times set in practice. Any of the A1 Teams’ drivers that set a practice time within 102 per cent of the team’s fastest qualifying lap are in with a chance to race although the driver who takes part in qualifying does not necessarily race.
A team manager can chose any suitable driver to race as long as they’re quick enough. This simple rule adds a new dimension to the sport whereby drivers can excel under certain race conditions, some being qualifying experts while others display incredible race pace.
A1GP Races:
An A1GP race weekend consists of two separate races on Sunday, a Sprint race and Feature race.
The Sprint race is a maximum of 24 minutes plus one lap with a rolling start and one mandatory pit stop between laps four and eight.
The Feature race is a maximum of 69 minutes plus one lap in duration with a standing start and two mandatory pit stops. One of the pit stops must be taken between laps eight and 16. The other mandatory pit stop window will be announced just 40 minutes prior to the Feature race start. There will be a four hour time gap between the start of the Sprint and Feature races.
Race Pit Stops:
During the pits stops the teams change all four tyres but in A1GP there is no refuelling — the cars start with the fuel for the complete race.
Points Allocation:
All points are awarded to the national A1Teams – there is no drivers’ championship – it is the country that competes for the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport title.
